The album serves as a deeply personal journey for Burbridge, who uses the Garcia/Hunter catalog as a means of processing his own grief following the loss of his father, brother Kofi Burbridge, and mentor Col. Bruce Hampton.
Reflecting on that process, Oteil shares, “Looking back, I don’t feel like I was able to really process all the pain from these huge losses until I started working on these ballads. All these arrangements were written through many tears. And all the vocal tracks were recorded that way as well."
"
"It is my sincere hope that this album will be a catalyst for listeners to process their pain as it was for me."

“Oteil didn’t write these songs. He simply sings and plays them as if he lived them - which, of course, he has. He casts a beautiful new light on these melodies and lyrics, through the prism of his own life experience, reflecting all the joys and sorrows, all the love and loss, in a voice so entirely his own, and utterly true to the man and the musician that I’m so very fortunate to know.”
