The flowers were in full bloom at Roots Rock Revival this year. We’ve been watching our students grow over the last seven years but this year it was truly springtime in the summer. There are many of our younger students that have surprised me in the past but this time my mouth was literally hanging open. I know many of them are about to start college and professional careers and some already have. I can’t help but feel really proud and honored to have been some part of what they are taking out into the world.

If you haven’t been to the Catskills in the summertime, you can hardly find a prettier place. The beautiful natural setting, combined with the friendships – old and new – and the inspiration that we all get from each other creates an experience that can’t be paralleled. Just ask any one of the campers at Roots this year. The vibe was so sweet that we are considering making future Roots Rock Revival camps by invitation only to preserve the magical vibe we have going.

From giving talks to private lessons to concerts to late night jam sessions, I always feel like I get as much out of it as the students do. A massive thank you to Henry Stout, and the entire staff at Full Moon Resort for your hard work to make Roots Rock Revival a reality. And many thanks to the incredible line-up of teachers and performers we had this year: John Medeski, Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger, Grahame Lesh, Duane Betts, Berry Oakley Jr., Elliott Peck, Junior Mack, Johnny Vidacovich, Cody Dickinson, Vaylor and Melody Trucks, Brandon “Taz” Neiderauer, Hash Vyas and Jeffrey Franca.

Plans are already underway to create an even more inspiring, hands-on and educational experience for our campers next year. I can’t wait to do it all over again!
